This work is a tribute to Constantine Orbelian, a conductor whose artistic presence is rooted not in flamboyance, but in clarity, control, and emotional precision. His gestures are minimal, yet they command orchestras with full authority. That duality, discretion and depth, was my starting point when designing this portrait.
The piece is composed entirely of Konto acoustic panels, a Finnish material I value for both its ecological qualities and its silent, architectural character. Its fibrous surface diffuses sound and absorbs light in subtle ways, allowing form and shadow to carry the expression. What you see is shaped by structure and tone, not by surface treatment.
Each tonal zone was studied and refined digitally, then cut with water jet into physical layers. Assembly required special attention to junctions around the eyes and hands, where expression is concentrated. Even small deviations would affect the overall balance.
From a distance, the composition reads as a clear, graphic portrait. Up close, the cut surfaces reveal the texture of the Konto material, giving the work a tactile realism and sculptural presence. This is not an image printed on a panel, but one built from it.
Mounted on a dark acoustic base, the portrait improves the sound environment while also marking a calm yet expressive focal point. It reflects the quiet authority of the person it represents.
There are portraits that reflect your face, and there are portraits that reveal a part of your soul. The work created by Virgil Niiranen belongs to the latter – a visual composition that, like a well-written score, blends structure and emotion in perfect balance.
Looking at this creation, I felt that familiar vibration I sometimes experience in front of a musical page: the lines are clear, the contrast precise, but the true power lies in the silence between the forms, in the shadows that speak. There is a subtle musicality in the way Virgil works with the material – like a composer who knows exactly when to insert a pause, when to leave space for breath.
Every detail seems crafted with the same rigor and sensitivity I’ve learned to apply when reading a score: nothing is accidental, everything serves a deeper expression. It is an art that doesn’t seek to shine for the sake of shining, but to speak essential truths, quietly.
I am deeply impressed by the sensitivity, vision, and finesse of execution. In the silence of this portrait, I heard music.
CONSTANTINE ORBELIAN
Constantine Orbelian is a conductor and pianist known for his exceptional musical talent and commitment to cultural diplomacy. Born in San Francisco to Armenian émigré parents, he began his career as a piano prodigy and gained recognition for his interpretation of Khachaturian’s Piano Concerto.
Orbelian’s international career includes leadership roles such as Artistic Director of the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater in Armenia and Music Director of New York City Opera, where he revitalized the company’s artistic vision. His collaborations with renowned artists like Renée Fleming, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and Anna Netrebko have solidified his reputation as a conductor with a deep sensitivity to vocal artistry.
With over 60 recordings in his discography, Orbelian’s versatility shines through. He is also an advocate for cultural exchange, having performed at global events such as the United Nations’ 50th Anniversary. Honored with the Armenian Order of Friendship, Orbelian was appointed Music Director of the Israel Sinfonietta Beer-Sheva in 2025, furthering his dedication to international musical collaboration.
