This piece was built around the idea of spatial depth, relying not on drawn perspective but on the natural fading caused by the thickness of air. By layering silhouettes of trees in progressively lighter tones, I aimed to suggest atmospheric distance using only a single material and a narrow grey palette.
The forest doesn’t depict a specific place – it’s more a distilled memory of being surrounded by trees, where form and repetition start to take over from detail. The shapes were deliberately reduced to essentials, focusing on composition rather than decoration.
The subtle outline of the cloud breaks the rhythm and introduces a horizontal element to balance the otherwise vertical structure of the trees. It keeps the piece from becoming too rigid.
This work isn’t narrative – it’s meant to ground the space, to introduce calm and depth. And like many of my recent works, it quietly improves acoustics while doing so.
We asked for a hill and forest scene that represented our view in the front yard. We were amazed with the final outcome. It’s a huge amount of cutting, lots of panel levels and extremely complex. Came out above our wildest imaginations. Like looking at a classical painting. Always makes me super happy to look at it.

Richard’s home is more than just placed in the forest – it lives with it. Surrounded by trees, it reflects a lifestyle shaped by time outdoors: harvesting, hunting, and working in the woods as part of daily life.
The house responds to this rhythm with clarity. Large openings connect directly to the landscape, materials are natural and unpretentious, and the interior flows easily toward the outside.
In this context, the wall piece in the main living space acts as a quiet accent. Its layered silhouettes mirror the view beyond the windows, integrating naturally into the space. It doesn’t seek attention, it belongs.
The result is a home where structure and setting speak the same language, and where nature is not just around the house, but part of how it’s lived.
This project began with the homeowner’s deep connection to the forest and the mysteries it holds. For Richard, the forest is a sacred presence - layered, elusive, and accessible only through a kind of dignified humility. I aimed to capture that very spirit in my composition. With an entire living room wall to work on, I could explore both the vastness of the wooded landscape and its subtle intricacies. The multiple layers - unusual for my typical approach - were meant to evoke the hidden depths of Finland’s endless forests.
The studio work behind this piece was particularly complex. Each cut element had to be carefully sorted, marked, painted, and assembled into modules ready for installation. The process demanded a high level of precision and patience - every layer aligned, every contour respected. It was a labor-intensive stage, where craft and focus became as important as the original concept.
The installation unfolded gradually, as each module found its place on the wall — piece by piece, the full image took shape. It was a process of quiet alignment, where spatial precision met artistic vision. In the end, the composition fit the space perfectly, both in scale and in spirit.
