DESIGNER's insight

This piece explores presence, identity, and control through a portrait constructed from layered peat panels in black, grey, and white. The material adds an organic, tactile quality—grounded yet expressive—mirroring the layered nature of voice and character. Its subtle irregularities reinforce the idea that identity is never entirely smooth or fixed.

The direct gaze and the hands beneath the chin suggest a figure suspended between introspection and quiet assertion. That stillness carries weight, implying both self-possession and withheld emotion. By working with fragmentation and contrast, I could simplify form while retaining tension—between clarity and ambiguity, nature and design.

I’m drawn to individuals who hold presence not only in how they appear, but in what they withhold. This work continues my interest in portraiture as a way to explore that duality: not just how someone looks, but how they shape space through both what is shown and what remains unsaid.

Peat, this primal, extrasensory material, becomes in Virgil’s hands a vehicle of transmutation, like lead turning into gold – a work that transcends form and settles into a more subtle realm, where truth is not spoken, but lived.

    To me, his portraits are initiatory mirrors – in them, one does not only recognize a figure, but an inner light. I thank him for this living art, discreet and profound, which leaves space for contemplation and awakens in silence that which truly deserves to be discovered.

ESTEFAN: Baritone. Director. Reformer.

Florin Estefan joined the Romanian National Opera in Cluj as a soloist at just 20, earning praise for his performances in works by Verdi, Donizetti, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky. His expressive baritone and stage presence led to national acclaim, including a 2016 award for Eugene Onegin.

In 2015, at 33, he became the opera’s youngest general manager, steering the institution toward a more dynamic, audience-focused direction. He launched large outdoor productions, opened access through free performances in public spaces, and founded the Opera Aperta festival—all of which boosted attendance, especially among young people, and attracted private funding.

Balancing his artistic and managerial roles, Estefan approaches opera as both a cultural tradition and a civic tool. His leadership reflects a pragmatic vision rooted in sustainability, innovation, and wider public relevance.

The process - from vision to detail

  • CONCEPT AND VISUALIZATION

    The starting point was a portrait photography. I reduced the image to three colors. The next step was refining the colored areas in detail until the portrait became expressive and convincing. The vectorized version, layered and set at final dimensions, became the file used for the next stage: cutting the Konto panels with a water jet.

  • IN THE WORKSHOP

    The grey and black elements make up the first layer, so after painting them separately, they are joined together - like puzzle pieces. The very intricate cuts that interlock need special care to avoid damage during assembly. Once the full base panel, made from these two colors, is ready, the next layer - the white one - is added using a previously designed template. The gluing is done carefully, and any small glue spills are cleaned off after it dries.

  • ON-SITE INSTALLATION

    Pellinge Marina is a quiet retreat on the island of Suur-Pellinki in the Porvoo archipelago, just off Finland’s southern coast. Once a traditional fishing farm, it has been thoughtfully rebuilt into a modern, low-profile resort that blends into its natural surroundings without losing the island’s original character.
    The resort’s architecture is simple and clean, designed to follow the shape of the rocky shoreline. Villas and suites open toward the sea, offering wide views and a sense of space. A wood-fired beach sauna and nearby forest trails add to the calm, allowing visitors to disconnect without going far.
    Easily reached by a short ferry from the mainland, Pellinge Marina offers a mix of comfort and quiet. Guests can explore the island on electric bikes, walk the coastal paths, or just take time to pause and enjoy the rhythm of island life.
