This portrait of Laila was born from a desire to capture her unique personality using a minimal yet expressive language. I chose to work with acoustic material not just for its texture and depth, but because it allowed me to sculpt light and shadow without adding anything superfluous.
Rather than aiming for a realistic representation, I focused on creating a structure of contrasts - cut-out shapes that suggest her softness, curiosity, and emotional presence. Every layer is carefully simplified to keep only what matters most: the expression in her eyes, the texture of her fur, the recognizable tilt of her head.
This approach gave the portrait a strong visual impact, while still feeling personal and intimate. It’s not just a likeness - it’s a quiet tribute to her presence in the family.
For the youngest, smallest, and dearest member of our family, we wanted something special - and we got exactly that. We were really touched when we received Virgil's work: a unique creation that captures every little detail of our puppy’s features. It’s a 3D piece made from a special material, one-of-a-kind, and it adds a beautiful touch to our home. This artwork brings us joy every time we see it, and our guests love it too. With its snow-white coat and bright, curious eyes, the Maltese is a charming little companion full of personality. Despite its small size, this breed carries itself with surprising confidence and grace. Maltese dogs are affectionate, playful, and deeply devoted to their humans, often forming strong bonds with their families. They thrive on attention, love to be cuddled, and are always up for a bit of fun or a relaxed stroll. Gentle and intelligent, the Maltese is well-suited for apartment living and makes an ideal pet for those seeking a loyal, loving friend in a compact, elegant package.
In this project, my goal was to create as much continuous white surface as possible, which resulted in an interesting composition of dense, unexpected curves. At the same time, I aimed to capture Laila’s personality within the drawing. The grey areas were placed in the same layer as the black ones, which helped simplify the color hierarchy and added structural stiffness to the base layer.
Securing the white area was very straightforward thanks to corner references and the overlapping edges in the lower-right section. The remaining scattered elements were positioned using a stencil to ensure precise placement.
