This portrait of Ieva, a soprano, explores the relationship between form and perception. Using only two colors and seemingly disconnected surfaces, I aimed to show how an image can emerge not through detail, but through distance and stillness. The intentional fragmentation suggests presence without over-defining it, encouraging the viewer to engage with the image slowly and to discover it over time rather than all at once.
Rather than focusing on a literal likeness, I wanted to reflect Ieva’s inner structure - the way sound, thought, and emotion coexist in tension and balance. This inward quality, so present in her music, felt more truthful to explore through abstraction than representation. The work follows a musical logic, with pauses, contrasts, and quiet resolutions that mirror the unfolding of a melody or the pacing of a vocal phrase. It’s more about how identity can be sensed gradually, as something layered and alive beneath the surface.
Ieva Barbora Juozapaitytė is a distinguished Lithuanian soprano, celebrated for her captivating performances that blend classical elegance with contemporary vibrancy. A graduate of both the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre and the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, she quickly rose through the ranks of Lithuania’s opera scene. Her emotive voice and commanding stage presence have earned her recognition both locally and internationally.
Her diverse repertoire includes iconic roles such as Violetta in La Traviata and Mimì in La Bohème. In this particular case, the individual white and dark red elements, were designed to exist separately, spaced across the surface. Each shape was placed according to a mapped layout, allowing the overall image to take form only when viewed from a certain distance. The result relies less on physical connection and more on optical coherence.
The final placement of the piece was Ieva’s decision - and a smart one. Instead of hanging it in the more expected, decorative corner of the living room, she chose the balcony wall. There, the work faces natural light and gains an entirely different rhythm, detached from the distractions of the interior. The neutral background and soft outdoor light bring out the cut lines clearly, and the solitude of the space fits the quiet intensity of the portrait.
